Donating Appreciated Assets Is a Great Way to Support Ministry

Donating appreciated assets is one of the best ways to make a gift or donation to a favorite ministry. Gifting appreciated assets—things like real estate, stocks or other securities—can be a blessing to both you and the ministries you choose to support.

By donating assets that have grown in value, you can often avoid incurring capital gains taxes on their sale, plus benefit from an immediate tax deduction that year. More importantly, that means you can provide a greater gift to ministry, versus much of the gift being reduced by taxes.

Gifting appreciated assets during your lifetime

Unfortunately, few people know about the benefits of using appreciated assets to fulfill the call they feel to support ministry. The vast majority of Americans use cash or checks to make charitable donations, whereas, if they used appreciated assets, they’d potentially be able to make larger gifts, while also lowering their tax bill.

Types of appreciated assets you can donate

The best assets to use for a gift are those that have appreciated significantly, such as publicly traded securities and real property. Furthermore, only assets you’ve owned for more than one year typically qualify for the full range of tax benefits. Typical appreciated assets may include:

  • Publicly traded securities
  • Privately/closely held stock
  • Mutual funds
  • Real estate or other property
  • Artwork
  • Collectibles

Can all ministries accept appreciated assets?

Some ministries and charities may not have the ability to accept appreciated assets, or may struggle at how to convert them to fund their mission. The Foundation can act as a bridge to liquify such assets (as a non-profit, we are exempt from the taxes you’d pay if you liquified them yourself), and then pass on the assets’ full value to the ministry or ministries you wish to support.
